From the inception of Madcap in 2008, our core passion and focus has been to share exceptional coffees from producers with the world. As time has passed, our relationships with producers have blossomed and matured, impressing on us the reality and challenges of producing coffee. Since the beginning, we’ve taken steps to ensure we are paying producers in an equitable way, but we also feel a heavy burden that there is so much more to be done. We believe it must be an industry-wide effort to improve the compensation of farmers across the globe, who are ultimately at the heart and soul of producing exceptional coffee so many of us enjoy.
With this in mind, we have been considering the best way to engage publically in the ongoing conversation about equitable compensation across the coffee supply chain. One official way we are going to do this is through the release of our transparency report, which we are releasing for the first time in 2020, and will continue to do so in the years to come on an annual basis. It is our deep and sincere hope that this action will promote more conversation and thoughtfulness amongst our collective community, but ultimately we hope that this report and others like it inspire action across the coffee industry. Although we are only one voice, we feel a responsibility to clearly communicate where we stand on this issue.
Our 2019 Transparency Report details all the green coffee we purchased in 2019 along with F.O.B. prices paid. In addition, we are standing with several other companies in taking The Pledge, where we will disclose the price returning to origin on our website—an indicator of how much economic benefit the community who grew the coffee receives from its sale. From our perspective, these actions are both the accumulation of many years of thought and also only the beginning of a sustainable coffee future. We hope you will join us on the journey and ask questions along the way.
