Ejo Heza, or “a beautiful tomorrow”, is an all women’s cooperative in the Rutsiro District of Western Rwanda. There are about 400 women that work together to produce Bourbon-derived varieties in a shared community field and in smaller family plots near their homes. The coffee is all grown at elevations between 1650 and 1900 meters. Once the coffee is harvested they collectively process the coffee at the nearby washing station, KOPAKAMA, located in the gorgeous green rolling hills of Rutsiro overlooking Lake Kivu.
Ejo Heza began in 2010 with the vision of bringing the community together. Despite different backgrounds and storylines, the farmers work together on sustainable agricultural practices and support one another in growing coffee that expresses the heart of the fertile land. This is our first year partnering with the women at Ejo Heza after paying a visit this past growing season and being impressed by their operation. We are offering a limited selection from “A Beautiful Tomorrow” that sings with soulful exuberance. In the cup we are finding soft, expressive flavors that are akin to enjoying a cup of jasmine white tea with a piece of peach cobbler.
