Miguel Ortiz is the first coffee producer we began partnering with in Santa Barbara, Honduras back in 2013. We were fascinated and impressed by the coffee coming from this increasingly famous micro-region for quite some time and, in 2013, we decided to finally pay a visit. Miguel Ortiz’s coffee immediately caught our attention the first time we tasted it. It danced with superb sweetness, paired with a wild complexity that we don’t often find in coffee; one where sweet and savory tactfully interact together.
Miguel’s farm, La Guinellera, is located on his property next to his home in Las Flores, Santa Barbara. The climate is cool and the harvest is one of the later ones we find in all of Central America. Miguel is a native of the area and a life-time coffee farmer who runs a true family business in partnership with his wife and children who all play a role producing coffee on the farm.
Though they have been hit with some challenges due to tough, unexpected weather patterns, they continue to work diligently each year to deliver a selection of coffee that rivals all of the great coffees from the area. This year’s selection reminds us of that first year we worked with Miguel. The hard work and dedication they pour into the farm each season translates well into the cup with a flavor akin to biting into the most delicious concord grape fresh from the farmer’s market.
