Thiriku Cooperative is located in the famous coffee growing region of Nyeri in Central Kenya. Over the years, Thiriku has garnered a reputation for consistently producing some of the area’s finest coffee. The washing station is at one of the highest elevations at which coffee is processed in all of Kenya at 1900 meters. The factory receives SL28 and SL34 coffee cherries from its 2500 members who farm small plots of land surrounding the station, with elevations stretching as high as 2100 meters. Due to its lofty location, they experience a cooler micro-climate resulting in slower fruit maturation and longer fermentation times.
Thiriku is detail oriented throughout the entire process from the sorting of only the ripest cherries, to rotating out the water used for fermentation regularly, down to the amount of time the coffees are held conditioning at the mill before they are delivered to the buyer. The perfect climate paired with the methodical approach deliver an exhilarating coffee with sunny tropical acidity and articulate plum sweetness.
