In Antigua, Guatemala, volcanoes dominate the horizon and local farmers cultivate the nutrient-rich soil to grow coffees of world-renowned quality. Luis Pedro Zelaya calls this region’s coffee Hunapu, after the Mayan name for the largest volcano in the region. Luis Pedro is a fourth-generation coffee farmer and the owner of Beneficio Bella Vista, where nearly 300 farmers deliver ripe, sorted coffee, sometimes from as far as several hours away, that undergoes a long, cool fermentation and a thorough washing and drying.
The work that Bella Vista puts into supporting the surrounding communities truly resonates and inspires the effort we put in at Madcap. Not only does Bella Vista pay a premium for the coffee delivered there, they also offer workshops to improve the sustainability of coffee farming in the area, focusing on regenerative farming practices and eliminating use of herbicides and fungicides.
For the third year in a row, Hunapu comes from a farmer named Jose Asunción Hernández Illescas. Jose and his wife Maria Lidia Paredes have farmed their 5 hectares of land for over 20 years. A quintessential representation of the quality in Antigua, expect a coffee with great structure and mild acidity balanced by a syrupy, juicy sweetness. Tasting notes of milk chocolate, apricot, and raw sugar make this lot one of our favorites.
